Twisting & Turning

Mar 26, 2019

Looking from every angle is different and gives us a different perspective!

Sometimes we literally tie ourselves up in knots and it takes us a while to get out of them. Twisting asanas can give us insight and inspire us to a systematic approach to untying the tangles we’ve woven ourselves into.

We cannot walk on a straight path if our road is twisted.

Twists should be performed every day, as they exercise the muscles of the spine which makes the spinal column more flexible and stimulates the spinal nerves.

Twists also have a strong influence on the abdominal region, alternatively stretching and compressing each side as the body twists from one side to the other.

It is best to twist and compress the R side of the body first and then the L side so we compress the R side and push the energies to the L side to move the energies out of the body in the direction of the intestines to help release toxins from the body in an orderly way~~~~~~~~~~

Most spinal twists enhance the panic flow in the Samana region around the navel in the body.

This nourishes the following organs: the pancreas, kidneys, stomach, small intestine, liver and gall bladder, as the twists relieve associated disorders and rejuvenates the tissues generally as after the compression there is a flush of blood coming back through the organs.

Indian yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar describes twists as a “squeeze-and-soak” action: The organs are compressed during a twist, pushing out blood filled with metabolic by-products and toxins. When we release the twist, fresh blood flows in, carrying oxygen and the building blocks for tissue healing. So from the physiological standpoint, twists stimulate circulation and have a cleansing and refreshing effect on the torso organs and associated glands.

This region is also associated with manipura chakra, a plexus/energy channel supplying the whole body and thus twists have a strong effect on the wellbeing and vitality of the whole body.

On an emotional level, controlled twisting represents a means of managing the knots and problems of life.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
If you suffer from disc-herniation then twists are not advised.

IN pregnancy, we always do open twists, never closing off the body/abdominal region.

NB: Always lift and extend the spine before twisting it to create space and openness between the vertebrae of the spine!
